Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe, which hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, was painted by Édouard Manet in 1862. To me it’s very disturbing, as perhaps it was intended to be. It’s almost too obvious an illustration for a picnic theme, but it’s also a beautifully painted expression of the relationship between the genders as understood by mid-19^th-century males.…
