On that trip to Newfoundland that I described here last week, I was not looking for great food. The island is not noted for its gastronomy which, I was told, consists of cod, cod, and cod, followed by salt cod. Nonetheless, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the simple food that was offered, often in very humble roadside establishments. The following are a few treasures:
